pg. 114 : "Scipio!" Dotter Massimo's face turned purple with anger. "Can't you see I have a visitor? How often do I have to tell you to knock? What if the gentlemen from Rome had been here already? How would it look if my son barged into our meeting because of a sick cat?"
Victor turned around looked into a pair of frightened black eyes.
What this means to me:
This is one of my favorite passages in the book because this is the point in the book where the story took off. From this passage the reader learns that everything is not as it seems; Scopio really is not an orphan, he is the son of a wealthy business man. This passage has quite a shock value; it is foreshadowing that some big events are about to take place. Not only does it add suspense but it allows the reader to take a quick break in the story to readjust their thoughts and to predict what he or she thinks could happen next. This is the turning point of the story to me.
I think it is great that Cornelia Funke throws the reader a "curveball." This is an interesting plot twist that will recapture the reader's attention and keep them fully engaged for pages to come!
