Britneys response the the second half of Weedflower

In the beginning of the second half of Weedflower there is a part where it talks about when Summiko was on the farm she wished that she had more time to go and play with the friends that she did not have. But then she says that she had lots of time but nothing to do. I think that this is true for many people that they take advantage of things when they have it. I think that during this time Summiko learned to appreciate living on the farm and helping her family around the house. After a while you could tell that these people were trying to make this their new home, they didnt like it but they took advantage of what the had. "Before long you could do many things in the town of Poston that you could do in any town. You could sit at the movies (if you'd made your own chair) get a job cooking food, drive a truck, build buildings, dig irrigation ditches, build basketball courts..." pg 135. I liked this passage because insead of sitting around complaining about what had happend to them they began building a new life. They werent being starved to death, or beaten either.
When Summiko realized that she had so much time on her hands she began building a garden. Even though the odds were against her garden she still tried. It was in the dessert, her family was telling her that her plants would not grow and she did not care. She even went out and colleceted her own organic compost. Eventually her flowers began to grow and she was so excited. I really felt happy for her during this time because there was no much for this young girl to get excited about.
My favorite part of the story was when Summiko met frank. They could share stories and relate to one another. Frank was Indian and Summiko was Japanese and they were both unwanted by the government. I think that this gave Summiko a sense of comfort knowing that she had someone who understood, and this was her first real friend outside of her family.
A part of the story that made me laugh a little bit was when Frank was being attacked by the boys and Summiko came and hit one in the face with a stick. Even though she was upset it still made me laugh because here is this little girl standing up against these boys. It shows how much she really values her friend Frank and how she is willing to do anything to keep him safe.
The part of the story that angered me most was towards the end on page 224, when the men came to the camp and said "Every man or woman in camp aged seventeen or older will be required to fill out a questionnaire in preparation for instituting a military draft of young Nisei men." This part made me angry because even though these people had been treated so poorly the governement still wanted them to fight for this country.
When Summiko was leaving it really broke my heart. You could tell how much she really cared about Jake, and that this was the first time that she had ever felt this way. In my head i was thinking to myself "No! Dont leave" because i really wanted her to stay and be with him. "She looked back toward the camp, half hidden by the swirls of dust. The world outside seemed drained of color, like a brown and white photograph." 255. When she said this i could picture it in my head.
There were many connections that i made while reading this book. One was the Aluetian people who were taking to a place that they were unaware of and scared and the second was the Jewish people during ww2. All of these were terrible times in history and you would of thought that after the first one happend that that would be the last. Hopefully people have learned that no matter the skin color, religion, or culture we are all the same..we still breath, eat, and have feelings.
